The basic idea for the book came from that meeting. But I invented the characters and the family. I set the book in the town where I grew up - Elizabeth, New Jersey–and sent Deenie and her friends to my junior high school. I think of the story as one about parental expectations. Deenie's mother says: Deenie's the beauty, Helen's the brain 5/5(1). When Deenie finds out that she has scoliosis, she’s scared. When she sees the brace for the first time, she wants to scream. But the words won’t come out. And Deenie, beautiful Deenie, who everyone says should be a model, is stuck wearing a brace from her neck to her hips. For four years—or : Ebook.

Deenie - Ebook written by Judy Blume. Read this book using Google Play Books app on your PC, android, iOS devices. Download for offline reading, highlight, bookmark or /5(32).   When I finally read Deenie, a year or so into my regimen, the book made me angry. The main character is a beautiful seventh grader whose mother is pushing her to become a model.

Deenie's world is rocked when a doctor diagnoses her with scoliosis, explaining Deenie's lifelong struggle with posture. Deenie attempts to handle her back brace with grace and dignity, investing in the ultimate payoff of a corrected spine. Blume's warmhearted novel sheds light on tween insecurity, puberty, and the desire to fit in. This Judy Blume book was not on my radar as a tween/teen so it was interesting reading it as an adult. Deenie is a young girl with aspirations to be a model. These aspirations are fueled by her mother, who refers to Deenie as the pretty one and Deenie's sister Helen as the brain. She is experiencing a lot of the emotional changes and milestones /5(11).

Showing Deenie’s initial distaste towards people with disabilities and injuries is useful only up until a certain point, beyond which it felt highly superfluous. In all honesty, these comments were enough to make me question recommending the book.
